Cells matrix

Clusters across two sets of categories. Sample data: requests across 16 topics in code, support, search and agents, by size from 128 to 16K, one cell marked at 1,284.

Installation

  1. 1

    Set up the registry once

This chart is free in Hearth and MIT licensed: no token. Add @chartory to components.json once (the URL alone, no headers), or skip this when another chart is already installed.

    Installation guide
  2. 2

    Add the chart

One command adds the Cells matrix component to your project.

    npx shadcn add @chartory/cells-matrix
  3. 3

    Use it

Pass your rows. The props are the Figma properties.

    usage.tsx
    import { CellsMatrix }  from "@/components/chartory/cells-matrix"<CellsMatrix  data={requestsByTopic}  size="m"  legend/>

Props

<CellsMatrix>

Every prop but data is a Figma property with the same name and values.

PropTypeDefault
data: The chart's data. The tables below list every field.CellsMatrixDataRequired
size: The size class. Each one is laid out again from the data."xs" | "s" | "m" | "l""m"
legend: Shows the legend row under the plot.booleantrue

CellsMatrixData

The data prop: one object for the whole chart.

PropTypeDefault
rows: The row labels, in order.string[]Required
ncols: The number of columns.numberRequired
cells: The cells, in order.[number, number, string, boolean][]Required
cross?: A crosshair on one cell: row, column and label.CellsMatrixCross—
yW?: The width of the y axis label column, in px.number36

CellsMatrixCross

The cross object.

PropTypeDefault
r: The crosshair's row (index).numberRequired
c: The crosshair's column (index).numberRequired
text: The label as shown.stringRequired

The data as a JSON Schema: schemas/cells-matrix.json

Cells matrix: a React and Figma chart in four sizes

What does a cells matrix show?

A cells matrix crosses two sets of categories, such as topic and request size, and colours each cell by its cluster, faded where it is sparse, so the busy combinations stand out. Use it for requests by topic and size, tickets by product and severity, or any two-way count.

Chartory ships it as a Figma component and a React component with the same name. The code installs from the shadcn registry with one command and lands in your project as a file you own.

What is the Cells matrix component?

It is one <CellsMatrix> component. Its props are the Figma properties with the same names and values, and the props table above lists them. The data is a cluster colour and dense or sparse per cell, plus one marked cell with its count.

Sizes XS, S, M and L re-lay the chart out from the data instead of scaling it, so labels stay readable at every size.

When should I use it?

  • Are both axes categories? Yes means the cells matrix fits.
  • Are the groups separate? Yes means the cells matrix fits.
  • Is it counts, not a link? Yes means the cells matrix fits.

When does another type fit better?

  • Weekday and hour. Use Heatmap instead.
  • Groups that overlap. Use Venn instead.
  • Correlations between items. Use Correlation triangle instead.

Cells matrix questions

Installing, data, Figma and plans.

  • Yes. It installs through the shadcn registry with the shadcn CLI, and the file lands in your project.
