Vertical profile chart

A value read down a scale, like a depth profile.

Definition · Updated Nov 2, 2026

A vertical profile chart plots a value against a scale that runs up the side, such as context length, altitude or depth, so you see where performance holds and where it falls off. Use it for model recall by context length or any measure read at levels.

Three signs it fits, and three signs another type fits better.

Is the scale levels, not time?

Values over time.

Yes: Keep the vertical profile

Are there one or two series?

Many models across measures.

Yes: Keep the vertical profile

Is it a profile, not a spread?

A spread of values.

Yes: Keep the vertical profile

Something else?

  • Levels such as context length read naturally top to bottom. The value runs across (60% to 100%), so a line bending left means it fell off.
