# Portfolio drawdown chart

> Show how far below the peak, and for how long.

**Short answer.** Show the drawdown as a fill below zero over time, with the deepest point marked: depth and duration read together. To explain the current drawdown, add a waterfall from the peak to today by asset.

## Common mistakes

- **Drawdown from the start value** Drawdown runs from the running peak, not from where the year began.
- **Only the depth** Duration hurts too. Show days since the peak.
- **Hiding the maximum** Mark the year's deepest point; it sets expectations.

## Questions

### What is a drawdown?

The fall from the highest value so far, as a percent. It is zero at every new high.

### Why does a −3.8% drawdown need +4.0% to recover?

A loss is a share of a bigger number than the gain that repairs it: 3.8% of $12.8M is $0.5M, which is 4.0% of $12.3M.

### Can I draw it from my own data?

Yes. The chart is drawn from your rows (date, value, drawdown) and lays out again for its size; nothing is scaled.

### Does the underwater drawdown come in every size?

Yes: XS, S, M and L, each laid out again for its size, in light and dark.
